The Spaces Between Us

This series explores the quiet psychological distance that exists between individuals and the environments they inhabit. Inspired by the emotional stillness and compositional restraint found in the work of Edward Hopper, these photographs focus on moments of pause, solitude, and quiet detachment within everyday public and private spaces. The subjects are often physically present, yet emotionally distant. Framed by architecture, separated by glass, or suspended between movement and stillness.

Rather than documenting events, the work observes the absence of them. Light, shadow, and structure become active elements, shaping the emotional atmosphere and reinforcing the sense of isolation that can exist even within shared environments.

Together, these images reflect the unnoticed spaces between presence and absence, connection and separation, inviting the viewer to reflect on the quiet distance that exists within modern life.

The Distance between us

This photograph marks the beginning of the journey. The figure stands suspended between land and horizon, present but unreachable. The light exists elsewhere, beyond him. It reflects the quiet distance that can exist between a person and the world around them, even when nothing is physically separating them.

Ascension

The figure moves upward, alone within the structure that surrounds him. The architecture guides his direction, but not his emotional state. Suspended between levels, he exists in a moment of transition, separated from both origin and destination. The photograph reflects the quiet solitude that accompanies movement through modern spaces, where individuals pass through environments designed for function, not connection.

The Threshold

Positioned between interior and exterior, the subject stands in quiet suspension. Neither fully inside nor outside, this moment reflects the psychological space between decision and action. The doorway becomes symbolic of transition, hesitation, and reflection.

platform silence

Surrounded by structure and scale, the figure becomes small within the environment. The emptiness around them amplifies their isolation. This photograph reflects the quiet anonymity of public spaces, where individuals exist unnoticed.

Interior, observed

Seen from outside, the subject exists within a contained world. The glass creates separation, reinforcing the distance between observer and observed. The photograph explores how isolation can exist even within shared spaces.

The night window

Light spills into the darkness, revealing presence but not connection. The figures remain enclosed within their own space, separated from the outside world. The window becomes both a frame and a barrier.

the waiting room

The subject sits in stillness, detached from her surroundings. There is no visible interaction, only quiet presence. This photograph reflects the internal isolation that can exist even in public places designed for connection.

between places

Positioned beside movement but not part of it, the subject exists in a moment of pause. The road suggests direction, but the figure remains still. The photograph reflects emotional and physical transition.

after hours

The interior remains illuminated, but disconnected from the outside world. Light becomes a symbol of presence, but also separation. The building stands as a container for human experience, observed from a distance.

the observer

The barrier of glass reinforces emotional distance. The subject remains visible, but unreachable. The photograph reflects the quiet separation between individuals, even within shared environments.

the enclosure

Framed by architecture, the subject becomes part of the structure itself. The environment defines their presence. This photograph explores the quiet containment of modern life.

This series does not document loneliness. It documents proximity without connection.

absence

The final image removes the human subject entirely. The space remains, but the presence is implied rather than seen. The photograph reflects the lingering emotional residue left behind in places once occupied.
